Republished sermon by Pastor Dan Pergrin

Republished sermon by Pastor Dan Pergrin

First: The below bible study was first published as a web page that was hosted by earthlink at the following location: http://home.earthlink.net/~worshipwithus/Harvest.Chapel.Sermons.htm I worked on this as a learning html code project. I forgot the things I had to do to get it to change the horizontal and vertical margins on the fly as you read it in your browser. Not bad for 2002 webmaster skills. Second: I thought I needed to enhance that version so re-published it, moving the copyright notices to a combination of footnote and hover over "title" code. https://ricklivermore.wordpress.com/2011/03/06/biblical-outline-on-the-baptism-by-means-of-the-holy-spirit/ A different but still good version is located here: https://ricklivermore.wordpress.com/2011/02/11/bible-study-on-the-baptism-by-means-of-the-holy-spirit/ which has no reftagger script on the new host site to activate the pop up windows. That is something I am blogging on Blogspot so now I can do. The <{{{>< link tells someone who hovers over it about the bible version and copyright date and publisher. Third the new site here: https://reader222.blogspot.com/2018/09/re-published-sermon-by-pastor-dan.html runs with https://labs.bible.org/NETBibleTagger/?ref=popup The https://labs.bible.org/NETBibleTagger/?ref=popup system takes someone who clicks on the bottom left corner "more" link of the hover over box to https://lumina.bible.org/bible/ for additional study. Without further ado, here is the re-published sermon by Pastor Dan Pergrin

Harvest Chapel Sermons
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

By Pastor Dan Pergrin
I. Where do we get the name “Baptism of the Holy Spirit?"
A. From John the Baptist Mark 1:7-8

Mark 1:7-8
7 And he preached, saying, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. 8 I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

Mark 1:7-8
And he made a proclamation, saying, There comes He who is mightier than I after me, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. As for myself, I baptized you by means of water. But He himself will baptize you by means of the Holy Spirit.

B. From The Lord Jesus Christ…Acts 1:4-5

Acts 1:4-5
4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

C. From the Apostle Peter…Acts 11:15

Acts 11:15 -16
15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

II. O.T.. Prophecy foretelling this experience!
A. Joel 2:28-29
1. …Last days All the days since the day of Pentecost
2. …Pour out Empty out
3. …All Flesh/Servants/Handmaidens “All” of God’s people

Joel 2:28-29
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My men servants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

B. See also Ezekiel 36:24-27

Ezekiel 36:24-27
24 “`for I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws

III N.T.prophecy foretelling this experience!
A. Mat 3:11-12
1; Baptize thoroughly immerse

Mat 3:11-12 2
11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 “His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

B. Mark 16:17
1. …these sign shall follow (them that believe)!
2. …they shall speak in new tongues!

Mark 16:17-18
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.

IV The fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy.
A Acts 2:1-4
1. …and they “all” (spoke in tongues) as the Spirit gave them utterance. Why all?

Acts 2:1-4
1 Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

B Acts 2:14-18
1 …this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel.

Acts 2:14-18
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.

Joel 2:25-29
25 “So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, The crawling locust, The consuming locust, And the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you. 26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, And praise the name of the LORD your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; And My people shall never be put to shame. 27 Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am the LORD your God And there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame. 28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

V Who is the baptism of the Holy Spirit promised to?
A. The apostles of Jesus………..Luke. 24:49

Luke 24:49
49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.

B The 120 in the upper room…. Acts 1:4-5

Acts 1:4-5
4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

C. The 3000 first converts……… Acts 2:38-39
D. Their children
E. Those afar off
F. “as many as the Lord our God shall call!”
Is the baptism of the Holy Spirit for today? Yes, because God is still calling people out of sin to serve him.

Acts 2:38-39
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.

G. Those who thirst for God…Jn. 7:37-39

John 7:37-39
37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

;VI. Who had this experience?
A. The 120…………………………. Acts 2:4

Acts 2:4
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

;B. The Samaritan church… Acts 8:14-19

Acts 8:14-19
14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.

1. Note: a Christian can be saved, water baptized, but not have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit!
2. How did Phillip, Peter, John know that the Holy Spirit had fallen on none of them yet?
3. What did Simeon the sorcerer see when the apostles laid their hands on the new converts?
C. Saul (later the apostle Paul) of Tarsus. Acts 9:17

Acts 9:17
17 And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

1. He was saved… (Brother Saul)!
2. He was filled with the Holy Spirit when Ananias’ (hands) were laid on him.
3. 1 Cor 14:18… (Paul) I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all!

1 Cor 14:18
18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

D. The 1st gentile church… Acts 10:44-48

Acts 10:44-48
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days

1. …the Holy Spirit “fell”.
2. …on “all” them that heard the word.
3. …because the “gift” of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the “gentiles also”.
4. How did Peter know that they had received the Holy Spirit? …for he heard them “speak with tongues” and “magnify God”!
E. The Ephesian church… Acts 19:1-6

Acts 19:1-6
1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper region, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.; 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

1. …and when Paul had “laid hands” on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with “tongues” and “prophesied”.
VII Who should have this experience?
A. Jn 7:37-39

Jn 7:37-39
37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

1. …“he” who believes on me as the “scripture” has said…
2.…they that “believe on him” “should” receive.
3. The Holy Spirit experience is described in this passage as …“rivers of living water flowing out of your innermost being. The salvation experience is described as a “well” (Is.12:3).

Isaiah 12:3
3 Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation.

VIII. What will the baptism of the Holy Spirit do for me?
A. Luke 24:49…endued (surrounded) w/ power.

Luke 24:49
49 “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.

B. Acts 1:8 …power to witness for Jesus Christ.

Acts 1:8
8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

C. Acts 2:11; I Cor. 14:16-17 …aides in blessing, thanking & magnifying the Lord.

Acts 2:11
11 “Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.

1 Cor 14:16
16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, How will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified

D Rom. 8:26-27…helps us in intercessory prayer according to the will of God.

Rom 8:26
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God

E. I Cor. 14:4…an edifying force to the spirit of man.

I Cor 14:4
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

F. Jude 1:20…builds up our faith.

Jude 1:20
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

G. I Cor. 14:2…provides a deep spiritual prayer language to pray to God.

I Cor. 14:2
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

H. John 14:26…teaches you and reminds you of all the things he has said to you.

John 14:26
26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name,
He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

I Jn.16:13 …guides into truth.

I Jn.16:13
13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

J Isaiah 28:11-12 …refreshes us

Isaiah 28:11-12
11 For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people,
12 To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,”
and, “This is the refreshing”; Yet they would not hear.

IX What are some of the questions most often asked?
A. Do I have to speak in tongues to be saved?
1. No! See I Cor 14:5;… I “wish” you all spoke with tongues…

I Cor 14:5
5 I wish you all spoke with tongues,
but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

2. Jn. 7:39…this he spoke of the Holy Spirit that they that believe on him “should” receive. You get to! Not have too!

Jn. 7:39
39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

B. Can all believers receive the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues? I Cor 14:5

I Cor 14:5
5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

1. Yes, all can receive their prayer language, but all do not function in the gift of tongues with interpretation.
C. Since I am already born again, don’t I have the Holy Spirit in me?
1. Yes, in you but not upon you.
Jn 4:14 – in
Acts 1:8- upon
Isa. 12:3 – well
Jn 7:39 – river

Jn. 4:14
14 “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.

Acts 1:8
8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Isaiah 12:3
3 Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation

John 7:39
39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

D. Why do you emphasize speaking in tongues when teaching on receiving the Holy Spirit?
1.Only because the bible emphasizes it on this subject.
E. If I am baptized with the Holy Spirit will I ever sin again?
1. Yes,there is no such thing as sinless perfection.
F. Is speaking in tongues of the devil?
1. No, not in this biblical context, though in some heathen religions the devil has been known to counterfeit tongues.
2. Jam. 1:17…every “good gift” and “perfect gift” is from above, and comes down from the father of lights…

James 1:17
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

G. When I receive the Holy Spirit will I be out of control and look silly?
1. No, you will not be possessed by the Holy Spirit. But you must yield your speech center to the Holy Spirit. Remember that a fruit of the Spirit is self-control.
H. Is this the ultimate in Christian experiences?
1. No, it is one of the first principles of the doctrines of Christ. (Heb 6:1-3)

Heb 6:1-3
1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits.

2. It is not the goal but the gateway to a richer and fuller spiritual life.
I. Can I expect an outward demonstration of the power of God?
1. Yes always, see Mt 3:16, Acts 2:1-4, Acts 8:14-18, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 19:1-6

Matthew 3:16
16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him

Acts 2:1-4
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Acts 8:14-18
14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

Acts 19:1-6
1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

J. Is it for today’s believers?
1. Yes, see Acts 2:38-39

Acts 2:38-39
38 Then Peter said to them,“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.

K. What can I expect to happen to me when I receive the baptism of the holy spirit?
1. Everyone’s experience is different.
2. Some have a spiritual high like being drunk with wine. See Eph. 5:18-19, Acts 2:13

Eph.5:18-19
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

Acts 2:13
13 Others mocking said, They are full of new wine.

3. Some have an overflowing experience like a river overflowing its banks.
See Jn 1:31-34, Ps 23:5

Jn 1:31-34
31“I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water. 32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 “I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 “And I have seen and testified that this is t he Son of God.”

Ps 23:5
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over

4. Some have a dramatic change in their life. See I Sam 10:6

1 Sam 10:6
6“Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.

5. Some get on fire for Jesus with a burning zeal for evangelism.
See Acts 1:8, Mt 3:1 1

Acts 1:8,
8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Mt 3:11
11“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

6. Some see visions & prophesy the Word of the Lord. See Acts 2:17

Acts 2:17
17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.

X. Are you ready to receive (to take unto yourself.) The baptism of the Holy Spirit ? Read Luke. 11:9-13

Luke. 11:9-13
9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 “Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!

A. Yes, you have faith in God’s promise…(you shall receive…)
B. Yes, if you know that you are a son of God…(if a son…)
C. Yes, if you are hungry for more of God…(ask for bread, fish, egg…)
D. Yes, if you believe that the Holy Spirit is a good gift…(gives good gifts)
E. Yes, if you realize that God is willing and ready right now to give it to you…(how much more…)
F. Yes, if you will ask Him for it…(to them that ask…)for it…(to them that ask…)
XI. What do you have to do to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit? The a.b.c’s!
A. Ask- Jesus to baptize you with the holy spirit.
B. Believe- he will give it to you and that you will receive it.
C. Confess- by taking a step of faith and speak in tongues.
1. Acts 2:4…they began to speak…

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

2. Acts 10:46…he heard them speak…

Acts 10:46

46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,

2. I Cor. 14:15…I will pray… notice your will is involved. If you do not start to open your mouth and speak in tongues the Holy Spirit will not give you his utterance. He never forces tongues on anybody: you must cooperate with Him.

I Cor. 14:15
15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
