The following verses are from the New King James Version
The following verses are from the New Living Transaction
4:1 From where are conflicts James asks about the origin of the disputes taking place in the church. among your members Refers to conflicts among church members. melesin: MEMBER Vines melos (μέλος, 3196), “a limb of the body,” is used (a) literally, Matt. 5:29–30; Rom. 6:13 (twice), 19 (twice); 7:5, 23 (twice); 12:4 (twice); 1 Cor. 12:12 (twice), 14, 18–20, 22, 25–26 (twice); Jas. 3:5, 6; 4:1; in Col. 3:5, “mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth”; since our bodies and their “members” belong to the earth, and are the instruments of sin, they are referred to as such (cf. Matt. 5:29–30; Rom. 7:5, 23, mentioned above); the putting to death is not physical, but ethical; as the physical “members” have distinct individualities, so those evils, of which the physical “members” are agents, are by analogy regarded as examples of the way in which the “members” work if not put to death; this is not precisely the same as “the old man,” v. 9, i.e., the old nature, though there is a connection; (b) metaphorically, “of believers as members of Christ,” 1 Cor. 6:15 (1st part); of one another, Rom. 12:5 (as with the natural illustration, so with the spiritual analogy, there is not only vital unity, and harmony in operation, but diversity, all being essential to effectivity; the unity is not due to external organization but to common and vital union in Christ); there is stress in v. 5 upon “many” and “in Christ” and “members;” 1 Cor. 12:27 (of the “members” of a local church as a body); Eph. 4:25 (of the “members” of the whole Church as the mystical body of Christ); in 1 Cor. 6:15 (2nd part), of one who practices fornication.¶[1]
Treasury - James 4:1 (King James Version)
Jas 3:14-18 — But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
Jas 1:14 — But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Ge 4:5-8 — But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Jer 17:9 — The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Mt 15:19 — For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Mk 7:21-23 — For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
Jn 8:44 — Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Ro 8:7 — Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
1Ti 6:4-10 — He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Tit 3:3 — For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
1Pe 1:14 — As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

1Pe 4:3 — For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
2Pe 2:18 — For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
2Pe 3:3 — Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
1Jn 2:15-17 — Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Jude 1:16-18 — These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. 17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
Jas 4:3 — Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
Ro 7:5 — For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
Ro 7:23 — But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
Gal 5:17 — For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
Col 3:5 — Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
4:2 you murder James may be referring metaphorically to extreme anger or hatred (Matt 5:21–22; 1 John 3:15). The Greek term used here could reflect a person’s tendency toward anger; such a person is on the verge of murder. filled with envy Unsatisfied envy leads to fighting and quarreling. zēloute = envy, JEALOUS, JEALOUSY Vines A. Noun. zelos (ζη̂λος, 2205), “zeal, jealousy,” is rendered “jealousy” in the RV (KJV, “envying”) in Rom. 13:13; 1 Cor. 3:3; Jas. 3:14, 16; in 2 Cor. 12:20 (KJV, “envyings”); in Gal. 5:20, RV “jealousies” (KJV, “emulations”); in Acts 5:17 (KJV, “indignation”); in 13:45 (KJV, “envy”); in 2 Cor. 11:2 it is used in the phrase “with a godly jealousy,” lit., “with a jealousy of God” (RV, marg.). See ENVY. B. Verbs. 1. zeloo (ζηλόω, 2206), akin to A, “to be jealous, to burn with jealousy” (otherwise, to seek or desire eagerly), is rendered “moved with jealousy,” in Acts 7:9 and 17:5, RV (KJV, “moved with envy”); in 1 Cor. 13:4, “envieth (not),” KJV and RV; in Jas. 4:2, RV marg., “are jealous” (text “covet;” KJV, “desire to have”). See AFFECT, Note, DESIRE. 2. parazeloo (παραζηλόω, 3863), “to provoke to jealousy” (para, “beside,” used intensively, and No. 1), is found in Rom. 10:19 and 11:11, of God’s dealings with Israel through his merciful dealings with Gentiles; in 11:14, RV, “I may provoke to jealousy” (KJV, “… emulation”), of the apostle’s evangelical ministry to Gentiles with a view to stirring his fellow nationals to a sense of their need and responsibilities regarding the gospel; in 1 Cor. 10:22, of the provocation of God on the part of believers who compromise their divine relationship by partaking of the table of demons; in Gal. 5:20, of the works of the flesh.¶[2]
Treasury - James 4:2 (King James Version)
Jas 5:1-5 — Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. 3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. 4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. 5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

4:4 Greek You adulteresses!
4:4 Adulterous people A figure of speech designating the unfaithfulness of God’s people (e.g., Jer 3:7–10; Matt 12:39). Unfaithful=moichalides Vines: ADULTERER (-ESS), ADULTEROUS, ADULTERY
A. Nouns.
1. moichos (μοιχός, 3432) denotes one “who has unlawful intercourse with the spouse of another,” Luke 18:11; 1 Cor. 6:9; Heb. 13:4. As to Jas. 4:4, see below.¶
2. moichalis (μοιχαλίς, 3428), “an adulteress,” is used (a) in the natural sense, 2 Pet. 2:14; Rom. 7:3; (b) in the spiritual sense, Jas. 4:4; here the RV rightly omits the word “adulterers.” It was added by a copyist. As in Israel the breach of their relationship with God through their idolatry, was described as “adultery” or “harlotry” (e.g., Ezek. 16:15, etc.; 23:43), so believers who cultivate friendship with the world, thus breaking their spiritual union with Christ, are spiritual “adulteresses,” having been spiritually united to Him as wife to husband, Rom. 7:4. It is used adjectivally to describe the Jewish people in transferring their affections from God, Matt. 12:39; 16:4; Mark 8:38. In 2 Pet. 2:14, the lit. translation is “full of an adulteress” (RV, marg.).¶
3. moicheia (μοιχεία, 3430), “adultery,” is found in Matt. 15:19; Mark 7:21; John 8:3 (KJV only).¶[3]

4:5 spirit which he caused This statement is not found in the OT, suggesting that James could be summarizing several OT passages (compare Matt 2:23; John 7:38; Eph 5:14).
ENVY, ENVYING=pthonon Vines A. Noun. phthonos (φθόνος, 5355), “envy,” is the feeling of displeasure produced by witnessing or hearing of the advantage or prosperity of others; this evil sense always attaches to this word, Matt. 27:18; Mark 15:10; Rom. 1:29; Gal. 5:21; Phil. 1:15; 1 Tim. 6:4; Titus 3:3; 1 Pet. 2:1; so in Jas. 4:5, where the question is rhetorical and strongly remonstrative, signifying that the Spirit (or spirit) which God made to dwell in us was certainly not so bestowed that we should be guilty of “envy.”¶ Note: Zelos, “zeal or jealousy,” translated “envy” in the KJV, in Acts 13:45; Rom. 13:13; 1 Cor. 3:3; 2 Cor. 12:20; Jas. 3:14, 16, is to be distinguished from phthonos, and, apart from the meanings “zeal” and “indignation,” is always translated “jealousy” in the RV. The distinction lies in this, that “envy” desires to deprive another of what he has, “jealousy” desires to have the same or the same sort of thing for itself See FERVENT, INDIGNATION, JEALOUSY, ZEAL. B. Verbs. 1. phthoneo (φθονέω, 5354), “to envy” (akin to A.), is used in Gal. 5:26.¶ 2. zeloo (ζηλόω, 2206) denotes “to be zealous, moved with jealousy,” Acts 7:9 and 17:5, RV, “moved with jealousy” (KJV, “moved with envy”); both have “envieth” in 1 Cor. 13:4. See the Note under A. See AFFECT, COVET, DESIRE, JEALOUS, ZEALOUS.[4] Treasury - James 4:5

4:8 Draw near to God Because the church was fractured and needed healing, James calls the community to collectively approach God. Cleanse your hands The Greek term used here, cheir, figuratively represents a person’s deeds (compare Psa 24:4; Isa 1:15–16). The command to cleanse them indicates that they were defiled with sin and required purification (2 Cor 7:1). double-minded See note on James 1:8. CLEAN, CLEANNESS, CLEANSE, CLEANSING = katharisate A. Adjective.
katharos (καθαρός, 2513), “free from impure admixture, without blemish, spotless,” is used (a) physically, e.g., Matt. 23:26; 27:59; John 13:10 (where the Lord, speaking figuratively, teaches that one who has been entirely “cleansed,” needs not radical renewal, but only to be “cleansed” from every sin into which he may fall); 15:3; Heb. 10:22; Rev. 15:6; 19:8, 14; 21:18, 21; (b) in a Levitical sense, Rom. 14:20; Titus 1:15, “pure”; (c) ethically, with the significance free from corrupt desire, from guilt, Matt. 5:8; John 13:10–11; Acts 20:26; 1 Tim. 1:5; 3:9; 2 Tim. 1:3; 2:22; Titus 1:15; Jas. 1:27; blameless, innocent (a rare meaning for this word), Acts 18:6; (d) in a combined Levitical and ethical sense ceremonially, Luke 11:41, “all things are clean unto you.” See CLEAR, C, Note (2), PURE.¶
B. Verbs.
1. katharizo (καθαρίζω, 2511), akin to A, signifies (1) “to make clean, to cleanse” (a) from physical stains and dirt, as in the case of utensils, Matt. 23:25 (figuratively in verse 26); from disease, as of leprosy, Matt. 8:2; (b) in a moral sense, from the defilement of sin, Acts 15:9; 2 Cor. 7:1; Heb. 9:14; Jas. 4:8, “cleanse” from the guilt of sin, Eph. 5:26; 1 John 1:7; (2) “to pronounce clean in a Levitical sense,” Mark 7:19, RV; Acts 10:15; 11:9; “to consecrate by cleansings,” Heb. 9:22, 23; 10:2. See PURGE, PURIFY.
2. diakatharizo (διακαθαρίζω, 1245), “to cleanse thoroughly,” is used in Matt. 3:12, RV.¶

Lk 18:14 — I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. 1Pe 5:6 — Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: *
4:11 Greek brothers.
4:11 speaks evil of a brother or judges his brother The law requires that people love their brothers and sisters in Christ. To speak evil against them violates the kingdom command to love (see note on James 2:8).
Treasury - James 4:11 (King James Version)
Ps 140:11 — Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him. Eph 4:31 — Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 1Ti 3:11 — Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 2Ti 3:3 — Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Tit 2:3 — The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 1Pe 2:1 — Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, and judgeth

Lk 6:37 — Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
Ro 2:1 — Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

Ro 14:10-12 — But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
1Co 4:5 — Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

Ro 7:12 — Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Ro 7:13 — Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
Jas 1:22 — But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Jas 1:23 — For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

Isa 33:22 — For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.

1Sa 25:10 — And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
Job 38:2 — Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

Ro 9:20 — Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
Ro 14:4 — Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
Ro 14:13 — Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. In these verses, James asks several questions and makes several statements. Make a list and reflect on those between now an Tuesday.
Why do you think James brings up these questions and statements? Because he is using the classic technique of a traditional teaching method similar to Catechism where you ask the question to get a teachable moment to come In James 4:6, it says “ ….God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” How does pride, our own personal pride, affect our relationship with God? We are harmed, God opposes the proud How do we become humble? By Lamenting, Mourning, and Weeping Look for answers in Jam 4.
Now go back and read Jam 1:2-4, why should we consider trials as joy? count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience Now move into Jam 1:5-7. How must we ask God for wisdom? 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. What should we expect if we don’t? 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways . Move down to Jam 1:8-10, what contrast does James make but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away. 11
and what is a characteristic of one that is humble?one that is humble is a lowly brother who will glory in his exaltation
Looking forward to Tuesday night…..make your notes and come with your questions…..
Praying for our obedience in Jesus. Grace to you!

Treasury - James 4:1 (King James Version)
whence
Jas 3:14-18 — But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
fightings
1Pe 2:11 — Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
1Pe 4:2 — That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

13:4. Cleanse your hands The Greek term used here, cheir, figuratively represents a person’s deeds (compare Psa 24:4; Isa 1:15–16). katharos (καθαρός, 2513), “free from impure admixture, without blemish, spotless,” is used (a) physically, e.g., Matt.
